JOSEPH VINCENT'S WILL

Will of Joseph Vincent [Jr.] [Kanawha County, WV WILL BOOK 1, page 2]
Written October 17, 1820; presented at court on February 13, 1821; at
court again on June 11, 1821. "At a court held for Kanawha Co. at the
courthouse therof on Tuesday, the 13th day of February 1821-
The last will and testament of Joseph Vincent deceased was this day
provided by the oaths of David Ruffner and William Blain witnesses
thereto and is ordered to be recorded, which said will is in the
records and figures, following to wit " I Joseph Vincent of Kanawha
County do by this my last will and testament dispose of my estate goods
and chattle in the following manner and form vigt first. It is my will
and desire that my just debts be paid out of the debts due to me if
sufficient for that purpose if not then out of my goods and chattles.
Second it is my will and request that no distribution be made of my
estate either real or personal, until my youngest child become of age
but remain in the possession of my dearly beloved wife for the support
of herself and our present family. Third it is my will that my negro
man slave called Bill and my negro woman Rhoda be hired out yearly and
the proceeds of their hire be applied for the use and support of the
family. Fourth, it is my will and desire that all my children shall
have an equal portion of my estate. Fifth, it is further my will and
desire that in the event that my dearly beloved wife should become
married after my decease, so soon as that takes place, the second
articlesor provisions in this will should be annuled and distribution
be made of the estate according to...she retains her thirds and right
of dower only. I do hereby appoint my dearly beloved wife, EXECUTRIX
and my faithful and trusty friend and [brother-in- law] William Dixon
as ADMINISTRATOR of this my last will.... my name...seal this 17th day
of October in the year of our Lord 1821.

ESTATE APPRAISAL OF JOSEPH VINCENT[jr.], DEC'D
from Kanawha Co. WV Will Book 1, pg. 221-223
Presented to court and admitted to record on May 9, 1836. "Previous
notice having been given the undersigned on the 26th day of March 1836.
Exposed to sale the personal estate of Joseph Vincent dec'd and hired
out such slaves as remained unhired at the death of the late LUCY
VINCENT, executrix of said Joseph Vincent and also rented the farm
until the 1st day of 1837, when the following persons became purchasers
of the property next following their names and the amounts at the end
of a long list- to wit.....
Long list includes:
Minerva Vincent for 1 bed and bedding and 1 clock
Joseph Vincent for rifle and 1 bucket
Spencer Vincent for hire of black boy, Jim same time 1st Jan. 1837"
"And on the 2nd day of April 1836, there was given up to me, the
following property, which was then appraised and sold to the persons
whose names follow." [I believe I may have those names on copies of the
will, which were sent to me or in the Vincent research, if anyone wants
more information.] The total of both groupings of property was $660.99.

The foregoing is a true inventory of all the property shewn me as
belonging to the estate of Joseph Vincent dec'd, together with the hire
of two of the slaves and the rent of the plantation, the other slaves
having been hired by the late executrix before her decrease given under
my hands this 2nd day of April 1836
